Create Your Own Car Winter Emergency Kit

With the recent snowfall and increased instances of avalanches in the state of Colorado, conditions in the backcountry—and even along our highways—have become treacherous.

Whether you take a trip or find yourself in a snowy commute, the National Safety Council recommends maintaining an emergency supply kit equipped for the winter months. Here are some items they recommend you keep in your car, especially for winter:

  • Inflated spare tire
  • Jumper cables
  • Tool kit and/or a multipurpose utility tool
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Brightly colored cloth - to make your vehicle more visible
  • First aid kit
  • Nonperishable, high-energy foods, such as unsalted nuts, dried fruits and hard candy
  • Snow brush
  • Shovel
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Warm clothing such as hats and mittens
  • Cat litter for traction
  • Blankets
