It’s the most wonderful time of the year.. and no, we’re not talking about Christmas! It’s almost fall foliage season in Colorado. It’s the time of year when our trees turn from green to vibrant shades of yellow and orange, filling Coloradoans with awe and wonder at the masterpiece of color our state has become.
For all outdoor lovers, this is a prime time to lace up those hiking boots and get outside. We turn over a new page from the scorching heat of summer to the beautiful fall breeze, and stare in awe at our beautiful surroundings. We’ll be sharing with you our favorite fall foliage hikes, times, and everything else there is to know, so you can get the most out of this season.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Colorado is infamous for being home to the extraordinary Rocky Mountain National Park, and this is one of the (closest) and best places to see the foliage in action. Our favorite part? Hop on just about any trail in the entire park, and you are sure to see the brilliant colors that fill the park this time of year.
Maroon Bells, Crested Butte
Aspen is infamous for the Maroon Bells. “The Maroon Bells are two of the most photographed mountains in all North America — and for good reason. Rising more than 14,000 feet above sea level, Aspen trees drape the hillsides, while Maroon Lake provides a handy mirror that grounds the whole scene in a postcard-perfect reflection.” The views that come to life in October will have you in absolute disbelief.
Flatirons in Boulder
The Boulder Flatirons have beautiful views of the foliage on the Continental Divide Trail! There’s several different route options, perfect for the beginner to experienced hiker.
Upper Piney River Falls Trail in Vail
Some call it Vail’s own version of “Maroon Bells”, this hike will take your breath away. From open meadows to the rushing waterfalls, to crystal clear lakes, this might be one of our favorites on the list. It’s a 6 mile Out and Back hike with spectacular mountain views.
